Norley selected for the 2012 George D. Graffin Lectureship
Parma, Ohio (June 21, 2011)—GrafTech International, one of the world's leading manufacturers of graphite products for a diverse array of industries, today announced that Dr. Julian Norley, Senior Corporate Fellow, has been selected by the American Carbon Society for the 2012 George D. Graffin Lectureship in Carbon Science and Engineering. As part of his lectureship, Dr. Norley will give a series of lectures in 2012 at universities and national labs throughout North America.
Based at GrafTech’s Parma, Ohio headquarters and R&D center, Dr. Norley directs the company’s Advanced Energy group, which works on materials for electronic thermal management, LED lighting, fuel cells and energy storage applications. He has been with the company since 1997.
His work on the development of natural graphite heat spreaders in 2001 led to a new market for GrafTech in advanced electronic applications, including plasma display panels, laptop computers and a new generation of handheld devices and smart phones. Sales of natural graphite materials for these applications represent one of the most rapid R&D-to-commercialization successes in GrafTech’s history.
“We’re proud of Dr. Norley for this well-earned honor from the American Carbon Society,” said GrafTech Chairman and CEO Craig Shular. “His pioneering work has been instrumental to the company’s penetration of high-growth markets, such as advanced electronics.”
Dr. Norley and his group have received four R&D 100 awards: in 2003 for heat sinks; 2004 for SPREADERSHIELD™ heat spreaders; 2007 for GRAFCELL®Flow Field Plates; and in 2009 for GRAFIHX®Flexible Heat Exchangers. His group has also won and executed over $20 million in U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Defense and Ohio Third Frontier grants in the areas of electronic thermal management, fuel cells, nanocomposites and heat exchangers.
Dr. Norley has presented at numerous conferences and workshops and has been published extensively in his field, with a total of 75 citations. He has been awarded 20 patents. In 2005, he was named Senior Corporate Fellow, GrafTech’s highest scientific position.
In line with GrafTech’s 125-year anniversary celebration this year, the theme Dr. Norley has selected for his lecture series is “GrafTech International: 125 years of carbon and graphite science from an industrial perspective—from arc carbons to smart phones.”
Each year the American Carbon Society recognizes an individual who has made distinguished contributions to carbon science and engineering. Previous winners from GrafTech include Drs. Roger Bacon, Irv Lewis and Len Singer.
